Pashmina & Cashmere

The Softest Luxury from the Roof of the World

Nepali pashmina is woven from the fine undercoat of Chyangra mountain goats found above 14,000 feet in the Himalayas. Each fiber measures just 12-16 microns in diameter — finer than the finest human hair — giving pashmina its legendary softness and warmth. Nepal has been a center for pashmina production since the 15th century, and today Kathmandu's Pashmina Industry employs over 50,000 artisans. Our pashmina shawls and scarves are handwoven on traditional wooden looms, a process that takes 4-8 hours per piece depending on the design complexity.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

Raw pashmina fiber is collected during spring molting season from Chyangra goats in Mustang, Manang, and Dolpa districts. The fiber is hand-cleaned to remove guard hair and debris, then hand-spun on a spinning wheel (charkha). Weavers set up the warp on traditional wooden handlooms and weave each shawl by hand, taking 4-8 hours for a plain weave and up to 2 weeks for jacquard or embroidered designs. After weaving, the shawls undergo finishing — washing in cold water, stretching on frames, and hand-fringing. Embroidered pieces are then passed to specialized needle workers who add intricate patterns using chain stitch, aari, or sozni techniques.

Pashmina & Cashmere — Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if pashmina is genuine?
Genuine Nepali pashmina is certified by the Nepal Pashmina Industries Association with the Chyangra Pashmina trademark. It burns like human hair with a singed smell (not like plastic), feels buttery soft, and generates warmth quickly when rubbed between fingers. Our products come with NPIA certification tags.
What is the difference between pashmina and cashmere?
Pashmina and cashmere come from different goat breeds. Pashmina fiber from Nepali Chyangra goats is 12-16 microns, while standard cashmere from Chinese or Mongolian goats is 16-19 microns. This makes pashmina noticeably softer and lighter, but also more delicate and expensive.
Can I get custom colors and designs?
Yes, we offer full customization. You can choose from over 200 standard Pantone colors, specify weave patterns, add custom embroidery designs, and even create branded labels. Custom orders require a minimum of 100 pieces and 4-6 weeks lead time.
How should pashmina be cared for?
Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, gently squeeze without wringing, and lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Dry cleaning is also suitable. Store folded in breathable fabric bags with cedar or lavender sachets to repel moths.
What is the MOQ for wholesale pashmina orders?
Our standard minimum order quantity is 50 pieces per color or design. For first-time buyers, we offer a sample pack of 5-10 pieces at retail pricing so you can assess quality before committing to a wholesale order.
